Precepting Skills and Teaching in Primary Care is an interesting and informative half-day program in which 20 physicians and other health care professionals addressed key aspects of effective precepting for residency training, such as communication techniques, primary teaching styles and adult learning behaviors. The presenter for this well-received program was James Deary III, MA, EdD, Vice President for Advanced Professional Development and Director of Faculty and Organizational Development for The Institute of Urban Family Health (IUFH), a primary health and education organization based in New York city. The program ended with role-playing exercises among participants to demonstrate the various concepts discussed during the presentation.
Overall program evaluations were extremely positive. The evaluations confirmed that that this program achieved attendee’s objectives and James Deary’s presentation received praise from the audience, with comments such as, “Bring him back!”, “…a great review and fun.” and “More of this!” Attendees made recommendations for program expansion as well as additional topics they would like to see addressed in future programs. It was noted that there were problems with the video portion of this program that will be addressed in future programs of this type.
