The strength of our nursing workforce rests upon the development and support of preceptors in the clinical setting who assist new employees in the transition to practice. To address this critical need, Catskill Hudson AHEC has developed the Nurse Preceptor Development Workshop. Please join us for this educational day filled with informative presentations and innovative ideas from the leading educators and researchers in nurse preceptor development.

PRESENTATIONS

21st Century Preceptor Development

Susan Boyer, M.Ed., RN; Director, Vermont Nurse Intern Project
In her keynote presentation, Susan will discuss her research as it pertains to the impact of a positive preceptor experience and provide a clear definition the role of the Nurse Preceptor. She will also describe the key components of a preceptor program as well as provide guidelines for the development of a successful preceptor program.

Role and Responsibilities of the Clinical Preceptor
Coy Smith, ND, RN, MSN, CNAA; Vice President of Patient Care Services, Benedictine Hospital
In this presentation, Coy will describe and differentiate the primary role of the Nurse Preceptor in the clinical setting.  He will further define the responsibilities of the nurse preceptor in three major aspects: Role model and facilitator of role socialization, Facilitator of learning and Resource person and coach.

Principles of Teaching and Learning
Eleanor Richards, PhD, RN; Associate Professor and Chairperson, Dept. of Nursing, SUNY New Paltz
This insightful presentation will focus on the principles of teaching and learning. Eleanor will describe three domains of learning, including an in depth discussion of the affective learning domain. She will also explore the connection between teaching and learning styles for the purposes of engaging and captivating the learner. She will conclude her presentation with techniques for effective communication and listening to further enhance the learning experience. 

Basic Clinical Preceptor Skills
Martha Twichell, MS, CCRN; Coordinator of Nursing Education, Bassett Healthcare
In this informative presentation Martha will address four major components of clinical precepting.  She will provide an in-depth discussion of the following topics: 1) Assessing learning needs, 2) Planning the clinical learning experience, 3) Implementing the clinical teaching/learning plan, and 4) Evaluating job/task performance.

Working Effectively with Preceptees
Judith Bromley, MS, RN.C; Clinical Nurse Specialist for Professional Development, Benedictine Hospital  
This presentation will address role expectations of both the Clinical Preceptor and Clinical Preceptee. Judith will provide useful techniques for time management and organization when working with preceptees. She will also discuss principles for conflict resolution as well as present case studies to illustrate how successful conflict resolution positively impacts the teaching/learning experience.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This workshop has been developed for nurses preparing for the role of clinical preceptor or to enhance the skills of nurse preceptors who currently provide clinical training for nursing staff or students.

CE CREDITS
This continuing education activity has been submitted to the New York State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Please note that all-day workshop attendance is required to earn CE credits.

REGISTRATION
The Nurse Preceptor Development Workshop is offered at a cost of $125 per attendee. A $75 student rate is available with valid student ID. Please include a copy with your registration.
