The first Exploring the Health Professions© workshop offered in the Catskill region was held on Friday, May 12th, 2006 in Albany. Workshop instructors included Terry Gefell of Central New York AHEC and Andrea Wade, PhD, of Broome County Community College. CHAHEC Staff members, Kathryn Reed and Kirsten Carle were on hand to act as facilitators.
The workshop’s sixteen attendees came from a range of counties, schools and facilities within the 11-county CHAHEC region. Many were high school Health or Family & Consumer Sciences (FACS) teachers or school nurses and several were community educators. Participants received instruction on the curriculum and engaged in numerous hands-on activities, including blood typing, suturing, dressing for surgery and multiple physical therapy exercises. Both the training and curriculum were enthusiastically received, and a number of attendees voiced their appreciation of the program throughout the workshop. Chantell Peeples of Hudson River Healthcare shared:

“Exploring the Health Professions was one of the best conferences I have attended. I really enjoyed the hands-on activities and am really excited to put portions of the curriculum in place this summer within our E.C.H.O summer youth employment program. The activities are well designed, medically accurate, easy to implement and will provoke interesting discussions about the healthcare industry and the job opportunities that are available.” |
CHAHEC will offer another Exploring the Health Professions© workshop in the Fall 2006. For more information, please contact Kirsten Carle via phone at 845.883.7260 or via email at kcarle@catskillhudsonahec.org.
