Join us at the Online Curriculum Development Workshop for a day filled with innovative strategies and insights from leading nurse educators in the specialty of online curriculum development and distance learning. Let these experienced educators demystify the process of creating an online curriculum. Discover what works and what doesn’t and learn how to apply that knowledge to your own teaching experience. This workshop has been developed by the Catskill Hudson AHEC to assist health occupations educators with the development of accessible, alternative approaches to education and training.

PRESENTATIONS

The Transition from Traditional to Distance Learning
Renu Varughese, PhD, RN
Assistant Professor, Mercy College

In this presentation, Dr. Varughese will introduce basic concepts of distance learning in comparison to traditional teaching and learning principles. To present these concepts, she will provide an in-depth discussion of technology assisted learning strategies pertaining to distance education, electronic communication and web-based instruction.

Methods for Developing an Online Course
Mary McGuinness, PhD, RN
Director of Nursing Programs, Mercy College

This presentation will assist a course instructor to convert traditional classroom learning material to an online environment by reconceptualizing course objectives, content, pedagogy, learning activities, laboratory experiences, and evaluation. Concrete examples of methods, multimedia, links and discussions will be provided.

Collaborative Pedagogy and Team Learning

SUNY Institute of Technology

At the SUNY Institute of Technology (SUNYIT) nursing faculty and Dean created an innovative approach to the design and implementation of a MS in Nursing Education program for adult learners. This presentation will focus on the principles and strategies used to ensure a collaborative pedagogy and interactive learning environment among the adult learners and co-facilitators. In this virtual environment students and faculty engage in critical reflection, genuine dialogue, co-facilitation, virtual networking and collegial collaboration; these strategies are used to enhance affective and cognitive flexibility among all participants.

Strategies for Online Teaching and Evaluation

A variety of online teaching assignments to be completed by online students will be presented.  Examples of online assignments include online discussion of short stories and articles, slide presentations, Blogs, and papers. Directions for the online assignments will be presented along with the evaluation tools for each assignment. Interactive group exercises will be provided whereby participants will practice using the evaluation tools.  

Panel Discussion
The program will conclude with a one-hour, interactive forum for attendees to ask their specific questions. All presenters will participate.

CE CREDITS
This continuing education activity has been approved for 5.25 contact hours by the New York State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

The Online Curriculum Development Workshop is offered at a cost of $125 per attendee. Please note that a group rate of $100 per attendee is available for multiple attendees from a single organization.
