2005 Catskill Hudson AHEC Funded Programs
- 12th Annual Critical Care Conference - Bassett Healthcare
- The Critical Care education committee of Bassett Healthcare
will present a conference with enlightened national speakers teaching
on subjects that are important to nurses in all areas of the hospital
setting. These subjects include areas as diverse as ethics, grief, family
needs during critical times, nurse retention through taking care of
themselves and the different causes of shock and its treatment. Although
this program is being developed by the critical care staff, the valuable
information that will be shared at this conference is as important to
an emergency room, medical floor or special care nurse as it is to an
intensive care nurse.
- Medical Student Housing/Faculty Development - Bassett
Healthcare - A program to assist third
and fourth year medical students with housing and faculty development
programs which will enhance recruitment, produce the educational outcomes
necessary for the accrediting agencies of the residency programs and
meet the needs of physician providers in the rural communities in the
eight county region that Bassett Healthcare serves.
- Nursing Clinical Preceptor Program - Bassett Hospital
of Schoharie County - A program to develop
Clinical Preceptor Programs to serve the educational needs of Bassett
Hospital of Schoharie County Nurses & community organizations seeking
involvement in healthcare professions.
- Palliative Care Certification - Bassett Healthcare
- A program to assist in eliminating barriers to National
Certification for cohort of Nursing Staff members, including RN, LPN
& Nursing Assistant.
- RN Refresher Course - The Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital
- A program to assist in the renewal of skills of nurses
returning to the workforce.
- Shadow a Surgeon Program - Mithoefer Center for Rural
Surgery, Bassett Healthcare - Educates
area HS students on heart-healthy lifestyles & career exploration.
- BENECAMP - Benedictine Hospital - A
one week, summer M*A*S*H Camp for 20 students 12-14 years old from Ulster
County area schools. The goal is to educate participants on how a healthcare
facility operates to encourage interest in a variety of employment opportunities
available. Students participate in activities that range from tours
of departments within the Hospital, to working on team projects with
professional mentors from the Hospital staff. Additionally, students
are CPR certified, educated in bio-terrorism responses and how medical
professionals deal with crisis situations.
- Health Careers Behind the Scenes / M*A*S*H Camp - Catskill
Regional Medical Center - A Camp that
exposes Middle and High School students to opportunities in occupations
in healthcare. Students get the exposure and encouragement they might
not otherwise have the opportunity to experience and, as a result, may
be stimulated to seek employment in a sector where there is a crucial
and growing need
- REACH-IT Program - Columbia Memorial Hospital
- A program that creates a model that is committed to
establishing an academic and vocational setting that cultivates and
increases awareness and promotes career advancement within the healthcare
arena
- Health Career Exploration Service - Learning Program -
DCMO BOCES - A program that is designed
to encourage 30, Kindergarten through 12th grade children to explore
and pursue healthcare careers through service learning.
- BCLS, ACLS, ATLS, PALS & TNCC Training Program - Delaware
Valley Hospital - Assist in providing
certificate and recertification in BLS, ACLS, ATLS, PALS & TNCC
for Delaware Valley Hospital staff.
- M*A*S*H Camp - Delaware Valley Hospital
- A 2-day, M*A*S*H camp for 20 area high school students
interested in exploring healthcare careers and who will be entering
8th or 10th grade in the fall of 2005. The camp will give students an
in-depth opportunity to learn more about various healthcare positions,
inclusive of those in non-clinical fields, such as community relations,
human resource, maintenance and finance.
- Nurse Camp - Dutchess Community College
- A program that enables High School Seniors to explore
the field of Nursing as a career choice.
- Mammography Training - Ellenville Regional Hospital
- Train 2 Ellenville Regional Hospital Radiology Department
employees in skills necessary to perform Mammography.
- Accelerated RN Program - Hartwick College
- A Summer accelerated
program offering educational mobility to those transfer and second degree
students who are committed to a compressed academic schedule to complete
the baccalaureate degree in nursing.
- ECHO - Exploring Careers & Healthcare Opportunities - Provides career and healthcare opportunity explorations for at-risk teenagers interested in pursuing future training in health occupations in the Hudson River HealthCare service, which includes five of the eleven Catskill Hudson AHEC counties (Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, Sullivan and Columbia).
- Using Interactive Patient Education resources to Improve Perinatal
Care Outcomes - Maternal Infant Services Network -
Program to enhance the skills of workers who directly
provide clinical and/or supportive Perinatal services to underserved
populations.
- Accelerated BS/DO Degree Program - Mid-Hudson Family Health
Institute - A program in collaboration
between MHFHI, SUNY New Paltz and NYCOM to condense pre-med and medical
students into 7 years vs. 8 years.
- Medical Student Clerkship Program - Mid-Hudson Family
Health Institute - Medical student rural
rotations & supports housing & travel reimbursement. This initiative
is designed to promote family medicine in the Hudson Valley as well
as to expose local students to a career in healthcare so that they remain
in the area for college, medical school, residency training and practice.
- RN Mentoring/Staff Development Program - Mid-Hudson Family
Health Institute - A program focusing
on nursing recruitment, education, technology, data and patient abandonment.
An effort to reduce nurse shortage trend and improve stability.
- Summer Medical Academy - ONC BOCES - A
program to encourage approximately 32 ninth and tenth graders, especially
from under represented and disadvantaged backgrounds, to pursue health
careers.
- Health Care Awareness Program - Orange-Ulster BOCES
- A program encouraging youth, especially from underrepresented
and disadvantaged backgrounds, to pursue a healthcare career.
- Summer Enrichment Program - St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospitals
- A 6 week, part-time, paid internship for local High
School Seniors and College Students to actively participate in and work
within one of the hospital's departments.
- RN Competency Program - Sullivan County Public Health
Services - Expand training & competencies
to LPNs and Home Health Aids.
- 3 R’s - Recruit, Retain & Reserve - SUNY Ulster -
- Middle School Healthcare Career Exploration - Ulster BOCES
- Program that provides 10 students from every school
district in the county the opportunity to experience various healthcare
careers in hospitals and ancillary healthcare settings.
- Spanish for Medical Professionals - Ulster BOCES
- Provide Spanish Language Skills to healthcare professionals
to help them better communicate with patients.
- Certified Nurse Aides & LPN Training - Ulster Office of
Employment & Training - Supplement funds
for training Certified Nurse Aides and Licensed Practical Nurses in
order to provide an opportunity for youth to pursue health fields and
to maintain a continuing education pathway for those already involved
in the healthcare field.
